There are few things as amazing as reading.

Reading is an act of exploration, of renewal, of redemption, of adventure. But it requires you to prepare for the task, it requires you to work.

Last night, as I was reading the book, Why fish don’t exist by Lulu Miller, I stumbled into a point in the book where disinterest started to creep in, enemy #1 of reading. Not every book is going to keep you hooked all the time you’re reading it. Most of them are going to have concepts and ideas that you already knew or simply don’t find interesting, but you cannot find the gold if you stop mining.

Picture the book as an ore. You can extract gold from it, but it requires some work, it requires you to dig up the earth and rocks. On other occasions, Some parts of the book you’re not going to understand at all and become demotivated, but you still need to push through to get the gold. Some parts of the book are easy and engaging, they’ll keep you hooked. And some other parts will require you to read it two times in order for you to get the idea of the author.

This is what I mean by books being like ores. You need to pick up your pick and get to work. Unlike videogames, unlike YouTube, a book offers you gold. Once you realize that, you do get greedy, greedy for knowledge.
